Chris Gunter joins Charlton Athletic

New Era client Chris Gunter has joined Charlton Athletic on a two-year deal, with an option for a further year.  

Chris began his career at Cardiff City, aged eight, signing his first professional contract in 2006. After impressing in Cardiff’s First Team he attracted attention from several Premier League clubs, eventually signing for Tottenham Hotspur in 2008.

He was loaned to Nottingham Forest in 2009 in a move which was eventually made permanent. Chris made a total of 146 appearances for Forest, before signing for Reading in the Summer of 2012. 

Chris played a pivotal role in the Reading side during his eight years at the Madejski Stadium. He was voted runner-up Club Player of the Year in the 2013/2014 season and reached the FA Cup semi-finals with the Club 2014/15.

In the 2015/16 season Chris made an impressive 66 appearances for Club and country. He played every one of the 46 games that lead Reading to the play off finals in 2016/17, captaining the team in the final.  

He now makes the move to The Valley, bringing his wealth of experience to the Addicks defence. Manager Lee Bowyer was pleased to secure Chris’ signature, saying: “Chris is an exceptional right-back with bundles of experience. I’m pleased to have that position tied down, he is definitely going to make us stronger.” 

In addition to his experience in the Premier League and EFL, Chris is a the most capped Welsh International player of all time, with 96 appearances for the Dragons. He was part of the history-making Wales team that reached the Euro 2016 semi-finals, the furthest the side had ever progressed in an international competition.
